Front and Rear Planting Scheme in Bromley

Overview

The owners of this modern period style property in Bromley were looking for a planting scheme for both the front and rear garden.

The Brief

Whilst the front garden was a dead patch of grass underneath a Holm Oak, which needed a complete new planting scheme. The back garden already had a number of established shrubs which needed to be incorporated into a new vibrant planting design. To add seasonal interest and encourage wildlife, especially bees. The clients were keen, amateur gardeners who like to spend a lot of time pottering in the summer months.

Design & Process

For the front garden we started by improving the soil with lots of organic matter and adding irrigation as the evergreen oak had depleted the soil and created rain-shade. We then used Mahonia, Weigela & Pittosporum to give structure through the seasons, with Deschampsia, Anemone and foxgloves providing the uprights. Euphorbias, Asters, Hellebores, Tiarella and Salvias adding colour through the seasons. The area also now benefits from lots of groundcover in the guise of Geraniums, Alchemilla mollis, Erigeron and Pachysandra to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

In the back garden to add more uniformity we planted eight large topiary yew balls. Then lots of flowering perennials; Geums, Peonies, Salvias, Penstemons, Verbena, Astrantia and Thalictrum with movement coming from the Calamagrostis and Hakonechloa.

This Autumn we will be planting lots of colourful bulbs so the Spring planting will pop!

Testimonial

“We asked Carole to design and plant a very shady area under a large tree in our front garden and to also supplement the planting in our back garden. This was only done a few weeks ago and already the plants are looking well established and beginning to flower. We’re really looking forward to seeing both gardens develop. Carole and her team were very approachable and professional and it was a pleasure working with them all. I would highly recommend.’’
