WINTER INTEREST MASTERCLASS

WINTER INTEREST MASTERCLASS

by Carole Jordorson | Feb 28, 2019 | Garden Tour, Tips, Winter Interest

I’d been racking my brains to think of a garden to visit in Winter as most are all about impressive herbaceous borders of colour. Cambridge Botanic Gardens has a Winter Garden that’s quite famous in horticultural circles.

WELCOME

As part of my own personal journey as a Garden Designer, I plan to visit as many gardens as possible (in the capital letter – destination sense, not any old garden) to gain more knowledge and experience. There is absolutely nothing that compares to seeing first hand, plants in their appropriate setting and planted in combination. I think it goes without saying that gardening is most definitely a profession where you are ALWAYS learning.

My intention was always to take pictures, as a reference, and the blog just sprang out of that, I’m gregarious and a sharer, so it feels like the most natural thing for me to do. Plus many of these gardens survive on their entrance fees and donations, so if I can help inspire others to visit then no bad thing!

I am interested in design in general especially mid-century modern buildings and interiors so I may share other things that inspire me but mostly the blog will be about lovely gardens and plants. I’m planning to post one a month in season (April – Sept) and less frequently out of season (Oct-March) but don’t hold me to that, as I am a wee busy bee.

About Me

Hi, I’m Carole Jordorson BSc, Dip. I love a challenge and feel that the best design ideas come from solving a problem or making the most of what you’ve got. I do believe that the garden is another room on your home and I very much live by that mantra in my own 1960s house, with its picture windows straight onto the garden which needs to make me happy all year round!

TIPS FOR LIGHTING YOUR GARDEN⠀ Our gardens have TIPS FOR LIGHTING YOUR GARDEN⠀
Our gardens have become the focal point of entertainment during lockdown. However, lighting is often an overlooked part of designing a garden, but it’s essential if you want to create a space you can use after dark.⠀
⠀
David Boultbee from LED and outdoor lighting specialist Ultra LEDs, shares five tips for lighting your garden:⠀
⠀
1.	Go for led lighting options in warm tones⠀
2.	Highlight focal points⠀
3.	Use romantic ambient lighting around seating areas⠀
4.	Make a statement with some bold lights⠀
5.	Light pathways with strip lighting⠀
⠀
However, make sure you aren’t using too much unnecessary lighting and switch off when you are not in the garden. As it’s very disruptive to wildlife.⠀

Do you have a limited budget for a garden makeover Do you have a limited budget for a garden makeover?⠀
I get it, we can’t all afford a Grand Design type overhaul of our property. A simple way to refresh your garden without spending a bomb is a new planting scheme. ⠀
🌿⠀
New flowers and plants can make all the difference to your garden, AND you can reap the benefits for years to come.⠀
🌿⠀
One of the services I provide is a planting scheme - I will agree on a planting plan with you, prepare your flower beds, buy the plants and plant them. I’ll also empower you with tips on how to maintain your new planting scheme for years to come!⠀
🌿⠀
These pictures are of a recent project I recently undertook. We added more planting to the existing shrubs which we then pruned. We also added a bit of extra paving, removed a pointless screen and added posts for a shade sail, as well as fixing the rotted decking. The total cost was approx. £6-6500.⠀

When you think of garden ornaments, what do you th When you think of garden ornaments, what do you think of? Gnomes? Mushrooms? Urgh!⠀
🌿⠀
I’m not a big fan of garden ornaments either! But one thing I do like is POTS!!!⠀
🌿⠀
They are a great option if you have limited space. I have a smallish garden and my sunny patio is high real estate for dining, sunbathing and even working so the pots help to bring the planting right up to the house.⠀
🌿⠀
Here are a few simple rules to planting up pots:⠀
1.	Decide where it’s going to go; sunny, part-sun or shady spot. Then pick the appropriate plants for the location. ⠀
2.	Choose the right compost mix for the plants – it will say if they are acid loving or not on the label, if not potting compost will be fine.⠀
3.	Choose a thriller (a plant with the wow factor, normally colourful foliage or flowers or both) a spiller (something that will trail down the site of the pot to soften the overall look) or a filler (normally I go with something that will give height like a grass).⠀
🌿⠀
Do you love potted plants?⠀

Happy Easter, everyone! ⠀ 🐣⠀ Hope you enjoy Happy Easter, everyone! ⠀
🐣⠀
Hope you enjoy ALL the chocolate today! ⠀
🐣⠀
Easter egg hunts are a great way to spend time in the garden with your family. Here are some fun ways to have environmentally-friendly Easter egg hunts:⠀
1.	Use natural dyes to paint your eggs. Once everyone finds all the eggs, use them to make an egg dish or compost them so they don’t go to waste. ⠀
2.	Incorporate learning about nature in your hunt by creating a nature treasure map or quiz for the kids so they familiarise themselves with the different plants and flowers in your garden. ⠀
3.	Leave no trace! Make sure all your chocolate and plastic is picked up in your garden so you don’t harm the wildlife.⠀
🐣⠀
Have fun!⠀

5 THINGS I LOVE: ⠀ Learning - I’m a continual 5 THINGS I LOVE: ⠀
Learning - I’m a continual learner, always studying new developments in sustainability and garden design solutions. This ensures I bring a fresh perspective to every project and my inspiration never wears thin!⠀
🌿⠀
The Environment - I’m on a mission to create beautiful gardens for happy humans AND healthy habitats. Sustainability is a core value of mine.⠀
🌿⠀
Talking - I’m a chatterbox; limit my caffeine intake or be warned. 😉⠀
🌿⠀
Interior Design - I actually started off my design career as an interior designer before transitioning to garden design. My house is an eclectic mix of colours, artefacts and textures.⠀
I am relaxed about dusting…⠀
🌿⠀
Upcycling - This is the process of transforming unwanted products into new materials. I have a vintage dressing table from eBay that I had converted into bathroom vanity unit, with the help of a handy plumber, and an off-cut of Obsidian green marble. I love it! Makes me happy every time I clean my teeth! ⠀
🌿⠀
Now, tell me something about YOU? ⠀
