Small Back Garden in Beckenham

The owner of this unloved small back garden on Foxgrove Road, Beckenham wanted to create an attractive environment to look out on to and relax in.

The Brief

A low maintenance garden with improved views when looking out from the house. And to create a relaxing space to sit in, whilst adding a bit more privacy, with harmonious planting adding year-round interest and encouraging wildlife.

Design & Process

The garden of this mid-century modern house already had these unusual hexagonal pavers, dotted about. As the hard landscaping was to be kept to a minimum it made sense to reuse these, from a design as well as sustainability perspective.

I suggested some small trees to improve the view of the garden when looking from the house, as well as leading the eye out and ‘borrowing the view’ of the larger trees in the adjacent communal garden. The new trees also help to add a sense of privacy whilst encouraging birds and other wildlife into the garden.

Slightly higher fences with top section as trellis enable climbers to grow, further adding privacy to the garden.

We also created an additional seating area, to soak up the evening sun whilst enjoying the evening birdsong.

“Carole immediately understood what I was looking for and created a design which perfectly reflected this. My rather bleak looking fully paved patio garden has now been transformed into a proper garden with a neat path down the middle and planting areas on each side with lots of interesting plants that I’m looking forward to seeing develop!”
